On October 16th, 2025, the Université Gustave Eiffel hosted the European launch of the Third Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities (ARC3.3), marking a significant milestone in international collaboration on urban climate resilience.

The event was organized in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN), and the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. It brought together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and institutional stakeholders from across Europe and beyond, united by a shared commitment to strengthening cities’ responses to climate change.

A Landmark Scientific Reference for Urban Climate Action

Published by Cambridge University Press, ARC3.3 compiles the contributions of more than 300 international experts. The report stands as a major scientific and operational reference designed to support cities in their climate transition. It provides concrete solutions, policy recommendations, and case studies aimed at accelerating urban mitigation and adaptation efforts in the face of the climate emergency.

The morning public conference featured in-depth discussions on the report’s key findings and emerging scientific approaches to urban climate challenges. Gerald Mills (University College Dublin) opened the program with a lecture on “Urban Climate and New Sciences for Cities,” setting the tone for a day focused on actionable knowledge.

Roundtables moderated by Maria Dombrov (Columbia University) and Margot Pellegrino (Université Gustave Eiffel) presented the main thematic pillars of ARC3.3, highlighting innovative research and cross-sectoral strategies. A dedicated case study session explored urban climate solutions through the presentation of the Urban Climate Atlas and design-focused workshops, led by representatives from UNEP and the National University of Kyiv.

Strengthening the European Hub of UCCRN

A central moment of the event was the presentation of the European Hub of UCCRN, with a special focus on Paris and Naples. Speakers Bruno Barroca (Université Gustave Eiffel) and Mattia Leone (Università Federico II of Naples) announced new structural developments for the European network, reinforcing transnational cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Closing remarks were delivered by leading figures in climate science, including Cynthia Rosenzweig (NASA and Columbia University) and William D. Solecki (City University of New York), emphasizing the urgency of coordinated urban climate action and the importance of scientific guidance for local decision-making.

The event concluded with a networking buffet and guided visits to Sense-City, a full-scale experimental mini-city facility designed to test technologies and innovations that contribute to making urban environments more sustainable and resilient.

A Hub for Climate Innovation and Collaboration

By hosting the European launch of ARC3.3, Université Gustave Eiffel reaffirmed its role as a hub for research and innovation addressing climate challenges. The conference symbolized international cooperation, knowledge sharing, and collective mobilization toward a more resilient urban future.

As cities stand on the frontline of climate impacts, ARC3.3 provides not only a comprehensive scientific assessment but also a practical roadmap for transformative action—ensuring that urban areas can adapt, mitigate, and thrive in an era of accelerating climate change.
